Presentation Policy brief on Provision of water for Livestock in the IGAD region Dar es saalam, Tanzania 12thSep,2018

Introduction The IGAD region namely, (Djibouti, Ertirea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda all are in the Horn of Africa (HOA) Area of land is approximately 5.2 million square kilometers, 60-70 % of which is Arid and Semi-Arid lands (ASALs) that experiences prolonged drought and unpredictable rainfall patterns (less than 600 mm of rainfall annually) IGAD mission is to assist Member States achieve regional integration through closer cooperation in the areas of:- Agriculture and Environment

Cont`… Human population: 250miillion people of whom 70million are food in secured and 40% of the world food aid goes to IGAD region but is home to 3% of the world population. In 2010/2011, the IGAD region was hit by a severe drought that affected more than 13 million people and exacerbated an existing chronic food and nutrition insecurity situation to famine levels in several areas. That is equals to over one million metric tons of food aid imported every year

Livestock contribution Livestock Population:70 millions its contribution to the GDP range between 10-20% Consumption of products of animal origin per persons per year in the IGAD region only amounts to about 30kg while industrialized countries people consumed 10 times this amount; 98 million cattel,173 million sheep and goat. this amount nearly half of the population of these species in Sub Saharan Africa; Poultry numbers is 151 million birds which is 20% of the total population in the Sub Saharan Due to the great importance of livestock in the region the major challenges are

Challenges Water scarcity due to recurrent drought Pastoralist Community mobility in search of water High mortality rate due to long distance

Intervention Introduce water harvesting technology Dikes building in place Digging of bore holes Construction of reservoirs Rehabilitation of water catchment

Recommendations Provision of funds by the member state countries IGAD is to lobby for funds with development partners and also to coordinate with stockholders
