Definitions of acids and bases

Arrhenius Definition Acids – substances that produce H+ ions in solution. Ex: HCl, H2SO4, HBr Bases – subtances that produce OH- ions in solution Ex: NaOH, Mg(OH)2, LiOH

Bronsted Lowry Definition Acid – proton (H+) donors, they give H+ ions to a base. Base – proton (H+) acceptors, they accept H+ ions from an acid Form conjugate acid/base pairs Ex: NH3 + H2O  NH4+ + OH-
