Supporting young people transition between education and employment Laura-Jane Rawlings

Who we are Youth Employment UK are the leading voice and expert on youth employment issues in the UK We are a not for profit organisation set up in 2012 to reduce youth unemployment and support every young person to progress We work with all stakeholders invested in youth employment and champion collaboration We work to engage employers in quality youth friendly practice, provide young people the tools to explore and develop their skills and career options as well as providing a voice on policy.

We collaborate with: With thanks to our Patron energy & utility skills people plus Big Lottery With thanks to our Patron

Our Purpose 1. To give young people a voice and empower them to be better prepared for the world of work 2. To help organisations be better equipped to support young people and adopt Youth Friendly principles 3. To ensure that government policy is geared towards the real needs of young people

Youth Employment Where We Are Today There are nearly 800,000 young people NEET (not in education, employment or training) Young people as a group are nearly 3 times more likely to be unemployed than any other group Since the highest levels of youth unemployment of 2011 there has been a myriad of government, private and third sector investment and policy reform

Structural Issues Youth unemployment is complex: Global Recession Social Mobility Structure of Jobs Young people unprepared for work Skills Mismatch Employer expectations & perceptions Education Focus Welfare support Access to jobs Funding for local authority services

The cost of youth unemployment Public Cost Economic Cost Social Cost Individual Cost

Family? Government? School? Local Authority? Third Sector? Business? Who’s job? Family? Government? School? Local Authority? Third Sector? Business? Mine? Yours? Theirs? Ours? Role of the family in social mobility Young people rely more on their parents for financial support than the parental generation. Young people whose families had economic and cultural capital were more likely to be dependant and less ambitious, whilst young people who received less family support were more independent. The values attributed by parents to work affects young people’s ambitions. Parents who directly showed their children work had more ambitious children.

Youth Voice Census What are young people telling us? 1498 young people aged 14-24 took part in the 2018 Youth Voice Census
