Kinds of nouns A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Concrete vs abstract nouns: Concrete: things that can be seen, smelled, heard, tasted, or touched Abstract: ideas, qualities, feelings

Common and Proper Nouns A common noun refers to any person, place, thing, or idea. They do not need to be capitalized. A proper noun identifies a particular person, place, thing, or idea. They are always capitalized.
Examples: A city provides a lot of different restaurants. (common) Los Angeles provides a lot of different restaurants. (proper) The school was a great place to learn. (common) Christ The King School was a great place to learn. (proper)
