Compound Names and Formulas Ionic & Covalent

First… Ionic Compounds

Naming Ionic Compounds Metallic Covalent Remember: 2 or more oppositely charged ions attract to form an ionic bond Cations : + positive Anions : - negative To form the name of an ionic compound Cation goes first Anion is second (has a different ending, usually –ide or -ate) BaO -- Barium Oxide NaF -- Sodium Fluoride BaF2 -- Barium Fluoride

Common Cations Ionic Metallic Covalent

Common Anions Ionic Metallic Covalent

Writing Ionic Compound Formulas Metallic Covalent Make a neutral compound # + = # - Lithium Oxide List the symbols for each ion (cation first) Li+ O2- Determine the least common multiple of the ions’ charges needed to make a neutral compound Need 2 Li+ and 1 O2- Write the chemical formula, indicating with subscripts how many of each ion are needed Li2O

Naming Ionic Compounds Metallic Covalent Some cations have different charges Use roman numerals to show the charge Copper Oxide Copper ions can be Cu+ or Cu2+ Oxide ion is O2- Could be Cu2O or CuO Both appear to be copper oxide. Distinguish with roman numerals Cu2O is copper(I) oxide CuO is copper(II) oxide

Writing Ionic Formulas Metallic Covalent Write formulas for the following ionic compounds. magnesium bromide rubidium oxide lithium nitride potassium sulfate ammonium phosphate MgBr2 Rb2O Li3N K2SO4 (NH4)3PO4

Next… Covalent Compounds

Naming Covalent Compounds Ionic Metallic Covalent Prefixes are used to name covalent compounds Left-most element (on the periodic table) is written first If only one atom, then no prefix Right-most element is written second and ends in –ide Always gets a prefix

Prefixes Used to name Covalent Compounds Ionic Metallic Covalent
