Globalization and the Non-Western World “There can be no doubt that what happens in one part of the world today affects the rest of the world. We are in an era of globalization, if being interconnected economically, culturally, technologically and educationally with the rest of the world.” This awareness of our interconnectedness has also been sharpened by our concern with how humans are affecting the health of the planet itself.” Before globalization, Western knowledge was anchored in classical Greek thought resulting in the dismissal of other systems and understandings.

Learning and Knowing from Non-Western Worldviews Knowledge is considered different in Western and Non-Western (or Indigenous) cultures. In Non-Western worldviews, “we know in experience, it is the kind of knowledge we carry with us.” In Western worldviews, knowledge is defined by propositional statements, “that something is so.” Three themes in Non-Western systems:

Learning is Communal There Is No Me Without You- not only is learning a communal activity in many Non-Western countries, so too is construction of one's identity. In Buddhism- Nothing exists in isolation, everything and everyone is the product of the interactions between other things and people. In Hinduism-Individuals, organizations, society, the universe, and the cosmos are all interrelated and integrated. The development of human resources is thus viewed in terms of facilitating the individual to realize oneself and to understand the intricate relationship between the individual and his or her role in organization, the role of organization in society, the society in the universe, and the universe in the cosmos.”

Learning is Communal (cont.) The individual then, does not learn for his or her development, but for what can be contributed to the whole.

Learning is Lifelong and Informal In the West, “lifelong learning is nested in an ideology of vocationalism. Learning is for acquiring skills enabling the learner to work harder, faster, and smarter and to help their employer compete in the global economy.. It is rested in a notion of the autonomous free0floating individual learner as consumer and mostly abdicated responsibility for the public good.”

Learning is Lifelong and Informal (cont.) For non-West, “can not be separated from the rest of life's activities. Its purpose was to empower the individual to be an active member of the community.” “very little of it is lodged in a formal institutional setting.” “community based and informal.” The difference is that in the West they neither recognize or value learning that is embedded in everyday life.

Learning is Holistic “I think, therefore I am.” Learning involves not only the mind but the body, spirit, and emotions. There is no separation of the body and the rest of our being. Moari and Native Americans see life as this circle where everything is connected. So learning proceeds in a cumulative and connected manner.

Non-Western Perspectives and Our Practice of Adult Learning Non-Western perspectives model a holistic approach to learning. Familiarity with non-Western perspectives of learning suggests that adult educators in Western society might place more value in learning embedded in everyday life. Helps adult educators better understand how adult learners in non-Western societies act and think.
