How to be more open to the needs of seniors Frans Meulmeester October 2018

Structure Meaning of life, a holistic view The word ‘dementia’ There is a meaning in every behaviour Facts, feelings and symbols Are we really open ? Do we have the conditions to be open?

Some basic questions What is important for you in your life now? What makes your life worth living for? What gives you joy?

Mr. Frantisku Some examples

Holistic ?

Holistic

Dementia Without mind In other words They don’t know what they are doing!

People who we call demented are doing things that make a lot of sense.

Some examples

We cannot decide, what is important or useful for an old person. We have to dis-cover it, we have to learn it from the old person. We have to listen to them with all our senses.

Facts and feelings Facts and symbols

Dementia is … at the end of your life fighting with your past. to fight now what you did not fight then, to cry out now what you did not cry out then, to speak out now what you did not speak out then. One big psychodrama with you in the leading role.
