Soft – Carpet and Rugs Carpet Fibers - NYLON Nylon is the most common carpet fiber. Nylon was invented by DuPont in the 1930s as a substitute for silk. Nylon is most noted for its durability Nylon is easy to clean. It hides soil well. One drawback of nylon is that it tends to build up a static charge.

Carpet and Rugs Olefin and polypropylene are two names for the second-most widely used carpet fiber after nylon. Olefin is not as durable as nylon. Olefin is water-resistant. An olefin carpet can be hard to keep clean. It attracts dirt and looks dingy when soiled.

Carpet and Rugs Polyester is another popular synthetic fiber used in carpets. Less expensive than nylon, it once had a reputation for being of poor quality. The downside is that polyester is the least resilient carpet fiber. It does not stand up as well to traffic and will not last as long.

Carpet and Rugs Wool is the most expensive and luxurious fiber in everyday use for carpets. But wool is high-maintenance. It usually requires a professional cleaner to do a careful job.

Carpet and Rugs Plush A single level, cut pile surface

Frieze A cut pile-style of carpet that has a very high twist level, meaning that each strand of yarn is twisted so tightly that it actually curl over at its end.

Loop Pile A carpet style that has a pile surface consisting of uncut loops

Sculptured

Carpet Terms Cut Pile A versatile tufted carpet that features clipped yarn loops. This type of carpet is soft and dense with well-defined individual tuft tips. Density The measure of how tightly yarn is stitched into a carpet’s primary backing. Higher density carpet will normally wear better than lower density carpet. Fiber The basic material that carpet is manufactured from.
