CITIZENSHIP CLASS LESSON FOUR: TEAMWORK

Is this team work?

teams What is a TEAM? A group of people with different skills and different tasks, who work together on a common project, service, or goal, with a meshing of functions and mutual support. Team members (1) operate with a high degree of interdependence, (2) share authority and responsibility for self-management, (3) are accountable for the collective performance, and (4) work toward a common goal and shared rewards(s).

Teamwork What is Teamwork? The combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient.

Benefits of Teamwork Avail more resources, ideas, alternative and energy Compliment one another Synergy Prevent individual burn out Be focused and accountable for reaching a goal Joy of working collaboratively rather than competitively with others Develop sense of oneness through united vision, purpose and direction Enable people learn new things more quickly

Citizens Covenant I will protect the unity of my church by acting in love toward other members, actively participating in a small group, refusing to gossip, following the leaders, encouraging other members to grow in their faith, and by living in a way that does not bring disrepute to the gospel or Fathers House Family Church. We hold each other accountable in this unity and covenant, following the teachings of scripture Acts 2:44-47 All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Nehemiah 3:1-32 – The Value of Unity, Teamwork, and Encouragement

Teamwork from the biblical standpoint Hebrews 13:17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. We should not measure our success in ministry by the amount of work we can do individually, but rather by the people we leave behind who can function as well or better than ourselves.

Teamwork from the biblical standpoint Ecclesiastes 4:9-12: “Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone and falls, it’s just too bad, because there is no one to help him. If it’s cold, two can sleep together and stay warm but how can you keep warm by yourself. Two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone. A rope of three cords is hard to break.” We are better together than we are on our own.

Teamwork from the biblical standpoint Nehemiah 4: When the Israelites were rebuilding the wall in Jerusalem, the work got tough and they got discouraged. Finally, they just gave up. So Nehemiah reorganized the work into teams. Half would stand guard with their spears and swords and protect everyone. The other half would work. Then they’d alternate their positions. He posted everyone by groups and families, so they could encourage and support each other. Mark 6:7:  When Jesus sent people out in ministry; he sent them out in twos. He did not expect them to minister alone. Acts 24: Paul specifically mentions seven people who were part of him ministry team. He brought others along, not only to train them, but also to keep him encouraged.

Leviticus 26 - God promises to multiply the Israelites success Leviticus 26 - God promises to multiply the Israelites success. This is increased with greater teamwork Leviticus 26:6 "'I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove savage beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you. 9 "'I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. You will still be eating last year's harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. TEAM – Together Each Achieves More

Understand one another and be able to work with one another. Ex 17:11-13 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up — one on one side, one on the other — so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

Teamwork: delegation of duties Ex 18:22-26 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied." 24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25 He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 26 They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.

Nehemiah motivated the team to rebuild the wall 17 Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace." 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God upon me and what the king had said to me. They replied, "Let us start rebuilding." So they began this good work.

What makes teams successful A clear elevating goal A results driven structure Competent members Unified commitment A collaborative climate Standards of excellence External support and recognition Principled leadership
