Handing down traditions

PANDOLCE GENOVESE Traditional Genoese Christmas cake 20 hours 8-10 year-old pupils Group work (mixed ages) COMPETENCES Mathematical competence in Science and Technology. Social and civic competences. Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship Cultural awareness and expression Problem solving: How to make pandolce choosing the most suitable recipe (simple, good, cheap) Cooperative learning: Measuring. Calculating. Reading. Looking for information. Discussing. Evaluating. Final product: pandolce

Something more Each pupil makes a Pandolce (usually before Christmas) to take home as a present for their family. We don’t have an oven at school, so we ask a baker to cook the cakes. The making of it involves different school subjects and, at the same time, a lot of fun!

Something more The pupils go to Varenna Valley once full of mills. They visit the only mill still working and a member of the staff shows them old pictures of the valley and describes the production process of the chickpea flour that we use to make FARINATA.

Something more The museum houses a lot of old tools used in the past for making paper. One of the staff shows the pupils around this fascinating place and, at the end of the visit, the children make a sheet of paper they can take home.

Something more information on olive trees, the production process of A lot of students of all ages visit the oil mills scattered in the west and east parts of our region.Oil is one of the most important products of Ligury and the main condiment in our cooking.During the trip to Varigotti and Albenga the pupils have the chance to get information on olive trees, the production process of oil and finally… they enjoy it!

Something more In Mele, a village in Leira Valley, there is an oratory which is famous for its frescoes and for the statue of S. Antonio Abate made by Maragliano. A guide shows the pupils around the small church telling them the story of it and describing the procession that takes place every year in August. Once at school the pupils work on the visit recalling the main points of it. One of the classes that visited the place five years ago decided to make a CD for foreign tourists.

Something more A mezzaro is part of the old costume still worn by people during historical processions or events. The original design on it was a tree, symbol of life.
