Today’s lesson? the Future

What are we going to learn in this lesson? Jipeee!!! There are four forms for writing about the future. When do you use each form. How to summarize the future. Questions and an exercise.

How do you talk about things that happen in the Future? There are four ways Using ‘will’ Using the ‘present continuous’ Using ‘going to’ Using the ‘present simple’

Using ‘will’ Think, guess or calculate that something will happen; The weather man said there will be a slight breeze tomorrow. Spontanious decision; I’m really hungry, I think I will order something to eat.

Using ‘present continuous’ Things that are happening at this moment; He is washing his hair now. We use it for the future with; Fixed arrangements, appointments or personal plans We are meeting him tomorrow. You make the present continuous; am/are/is + verb+ -ing I am playing an important soccer match this weekend.

Using ‘going to’ Planned, decided or started earlier We are going to America this summer. Predictions (proof, you can see it coming) Look, he is going to catch a fish. Oeps, now he is going to be fish food. To use going to; (am/are/is) going to Next year we are going to England.

Using ‘present simple’ We use the present simple for the present, facts or habits; He swims in the sea every morning. We can also use it for the future; Timetables rosters and schedules (Always, regularly) The bus leaves in ten minutes. Facts, personal appointments He starts his new job tomorrow. To make the present simple remember the rule; (he/she/it)+s

How can I remember the Future? ‘will’ ‘to (be) going to’ Think, guess or calculate Predictions (probably) Spontanious decisions There will be rain in the south. Planned, decided or started earlier Sure predictions (proof:You can see it coming, (am/are/is) going to Next year we are going to the USA. ‘present continuous’ ‘present simple’ Fixed arrangement, appointment or personal plan (am/is/are)+verb+ing I am playing tennis this weekend. Timetables, rosters and schedules (Always, regularly) Facts, personal appointments (he/she/it)+s The next bus leaves at six.

Questions?

Now you write two sentences for each form of the future. Two sentences using ‘will’ Two sentences using ‘the present continuous’ Two sentences using ‘to (be) going to’ Two sentences using the ‘present simple’ When you are done, give them to your neighbour to check them and check your neighbours sentences. If they are correct and you have time, draw cartoons for the sentences. Exercise and rules.
