What every Greenbrier Freshman HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS What every Greenbrier Freshman needs to know! Class of 2022

You’re not in middle school anymore! How does high school differ from middle school?

School Year Semester 1 Semester 2 1st Nine Weeks 2nd Nine Weeks 3rd Nine Weeks 4th Nine Weeks Period 1 Period 2 Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7 Period 1 Period 2 Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7 Period 1 Period 2 Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7 Period 1 Period 2 Period 3 Period 4 Period 5 Period 6 Period 7

Semester Averages result in CREDITS!!!!! How does it all add up? Semester 1 1st Nine Weeks 2nd Nine Weeks 40% 20% Period 1 – Grade + Semester Exam = Semester Average Period 2 – Grade + Period 3 – Grade + Period 4 – Grade + Period 5 – Grade + Period 6 – Grade + Period 7 – Grade + Semester Averages result in CREDITS!!!!!

To earn a high school diploma… You must earn at least Credits! 4 English 4 Math 4 Science 3 Social Studies 0.5 Health 0.5 Personal Fitness 3 Fine Arts, CTAE, or Foreign Language 4 Additional Electives

Grades and credits impact: Sports eligibility Be on track to graduate Pass 5 out of 7 classes in the previous semester Ability to exempt exams (may exempt 3) 80 average and no absences 85 average with 1-3 excused absences 90 average with 4-5 excused absences Homeroom placement Sophomores need 5 credits. Juniors need 11 credits. Seniors need 17 credits.

So if I make a mistake, then what? You recover your credit! But remember: These COST $$$$ ON YOUR TIME NOT easier than regular classroom instruction The class you need may not be offered

How can you earn good grades?

What about taking AP classes? Colleges evaluate your academic courses. Selective colleges like to see Advanced Placement (AP) classes on your transcript. Must be motivated, prepared for rigor, and ready to study MORE to do well in AP! Even if you don’t make an “A”… making a “B” in an AP class can mean more than making an “A” in a regular course.

How can I get the HOPE Scholarship? Covers % of tuition at any public Georgia institution 3.0 Core GPA at graduation (PE, Health, CTAE, Fine Art classes do not all count) *Some specific CTAE’s do You must also meet the rigor requirement -4 classes -They do not have to be AP courses -Examples of “rigor”—Advanced Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, Forensic Science, Anatomy, Spanish 2, French 2

How can I get the Zell Miller Scholarship? Full tuition will be covered at any public institution in Georgia 3.7 core GPA at graduation 1200 on the SAT or 26 Composite on ACT You must also take 4 rigorous courses

How can I graduate with Honors or become the Class Val/Sal? Honor Graduates– 4 year cumulative average of 90.0 or above Honors Night: Determined senior year, at the conclusion of the 3rd nine weeks Graduation: Determined at end of 4th nine weeks senior year Valedictorian (#1) / Salutatorian (#2) Minimum of 4 Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment courses

YOUR CLASS IN FOUR YEARS! Commit to raduate! GOAL: GRADUATE WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR CLASS IN FOUR YEARS!

If you need help along the way… Counselors assist you with academic concerns and personal/social issues - complete a yellow appointment slip or stop by the office to see if we are available. Talk with your teachers about getting extra help. Keep your parents informed about your grades and what’s happening in school so that they can help.
