The Scientific Revolution 7.1 pgs 232-237

Origins 1) The ancient Greeks used reason. Thinkers who followed them built on their ideas. This body of knowledge was the foundation of the Scientific Revolution.  2) The Greeks explained the universe first through gods, then through reason. 3) Renaissance thinkers rediscovered many texts from ancient philosophers. These were a source of new ideas. 4) Unfamiliar lands, new plants and animals showed the limitations of ancient and medieval science

New Views of the Universe 5) Polish astronomer Copernicus spent 25 years tracking the movements of the sun, moon, and planets. What did Copernicus conclude from this? The earth and other planets revolve around the sun. 6) The Italian mathematician Galileo built his own telescope. What did he see through this telescope? Moons revolve around the planet Jupiter  7) Newton, an English mathematician, observed an apple falling and realized that the same force that pulled the apple to the ground kept the moon in its orbit. He called this force gravity.

Vocabulary 1) rationalism – the belief that knowledge is gained by thinking things through using reason 2) heliocentric theory- the sun is at the center of the solar system 3) heresy – a belief that goes against church teachings 4) inductive reasoning – looking at facts and making a general rule or principle based on those facts 5) scientific method – using observation, experiments, and reasoning to gain new knowledge
