The Nervous System and Disease 1. Question & Research Task SLIDE NAVIGATION The Nervous System and Disease 1. Question & Research Task Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 There are many diseases that negatively impact the human nervous system. The number of people diagnosed annually with diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s has been steadily increasing. Research is being conducted to determine the causes and possible treatments for these neurological diseases. Image Source: Microsoft clip art In this Slam Dunk, you will conduct brief, focused research to respond to the inquiry question: How are neurons, the brain, and the nervous system affected as the result of biological disease?

2. Information Sources Parkinson’s Disease Huntington's disease SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 Parkinson’s Disease Huntington's disease Disease Overview Dr. Oz Discusses Background and Diagnosis Parkinson’s Disease Foundation NHS Video and Article Stanford University Project ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Alzheimer's Disease PBS Overview Statistics/Global Concern ALS Association Treatment Multiple Sclerosis National Geographic Diagram Dr. Murray Interview Brain Pop Video NY Times Article Image Source: Microsoft clip art

3. Student Activity SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 As you use the informational resources provided take notes on your neurological disease. Make sure that your research analyzes each of the neurological levels that are negatively effect by the disease. Inquiry Organizer Image Source: Microsoft Clip Art

4. Assessment Activity SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 How are neurons, the brain, and the nervous system affected as the result of biological disease? Develop a group presentation that summarizes your findings, organize your group presentation using a digital platform such as PowerPoint, ClassFlow, Voice Thread, or Discovery Education Board. Present your findings to the class and take Cornell Notes Record details and examples to clarify your understanding of each neurological disease and think about how it compares to your research. 5. Enrichment Activities SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 Research one structure of the brain utilizing the resources below. After conducting your research on a specific brain structure you will create an infographic that… 1) Analyzes the functions of the brain structure 2) How this structure works with other parts of the brain 3) Discusses any disorders that are associated with your chosen structure. 6. Teacher Resources SLIDE NAVIGATION 1 2 3 4 5 6 Learning Standards Alignment Unit 1: Indicator 03. Students will investigate the components of the nervous system in order to determine neurological functions. Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy Reading: 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Writing: 7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. AASL Standards Framework for Learners Inquire: Build new knowledge by inquiring, thinking critically, identifying problems, and developing strategies for solving problems. Think: Learners display curiosity and initiative by: I.A.2 Recalling prior and background knowledge as context for new meaning. Create: Learners engage with new knowledge by following a process that includes: I.B.1 Using evidence to investigate questions. I.B.3 Generating products that illustrate learning. Share: Learners adapt, communicate, and exchange learning products with others in a cycle that includes: I.C.1 Interacting with content presented by others. Grow: Learners participate in an ongoing inquiry-based process by: I.D.2 Engaging in sustained inquiry. P21 Framework: 21st Century Student Outcomes 3. Information, Media & Technology Skills: Information Literacy: Access information efficiently and effectively; Use information accurately and creatively for the issue or problem at hand. ICT Literacy: Use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate and communicate information. Objective: Students will investigate the components of the nervous system in order to determine neurological functions. Time Frame: 1 90 minute class periods Differentiation strategies for this lesson: Have students use learning supports provided in any BCPS-licensed Digital Content included in this lesson. Refer to Digital Content Snapshots & Support resources for as needed. Notes to the teacher: Collaborate with your school library media specialist to plan and implement this lesson.
