The Hunger Games By: Suzanne Collins Beware Spoiler there are spoilers. Essential Question: What type of ethical dilemmas can be found in a dystopian society where 12-18 year old children are expected to fight to death?

Author The author of The Hunger games trilogy is Suzanne Collins. Suzanne created books that explain dystopian society located in Panem where there are 12 districts and a capitol. To keep things exciting, they have a yearly battle to the death called “The Hunger Games” where two children (a boy & girl) from each district are chosen to go to an arena in the capital and battle until there is a final survivor. But something new happens in the Seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games: there are two victors.

Main Character The Main Characters in The Hunger Games are Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark. Katniss Everdeen: Katniss is a very unique 16-year old since she spent most of her life hunting and trading for food, for her family after her father died from a mine explosion. Her mother hasn't been much help since then all her mom has been doing is mostly drink so Katniss took care of her little sister Prim. So when it came up to the time where her sister (Prim) was chosen to compete in The Hunger Games Katniss volunteered since she knew here sister couldn’t hunt or hurt a fly for that matter. But Prim didn’t want Katniss to do that so Katniss made a promise to win The Hunger Games.

Main Character Peeta Mellark: Peeta is the 16-year old son of the baker, he has liked Katniss since they were five and he heard her sing. Once he even gave Katniss bread he accidentally burnt to her when he saw Katniss hungry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snKXo2S-lRg Peeta doesn’t have sharp hunting skills but he does know how to ice a cake. You wouldn’t think icing a cake would help you in the wilderness but Peeta uses his icing skills to camouflage himself.

Minor characters Part One Primrose Everdeen: This young lady is amazing at nursing hurt animals back to health. Haymitch Abernathy: Lives in the Victors Village of District 12. Haymitch is also the mentor of Katniss and Peeta. During the games Haymitch sends supplies that sponsor distributed during the games. Effie Trinket: The escort of the tributes from district 12, and she picks the names during the reaping. Gale Hawthorne: Katniss has never had a friend more dear than Gale. Gale is a hunter just like Katniss, he is also a coal miner. President Coriolanus Snow: Coriolanus is the president of Panem. President Snow crowned Katniss and Peeta the victors of the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games. Cinna: Whenever there is a important event Cinna stylist of Katniss (while she is in the capitol) is on the job. Glimmer: Die from a tracker jacker “incident”. Madge Undersee: Madge gave Katniss the Mockingjay pin that reminded Katniss of her father.

Minor Characters Part Two Foxface: The name Katniss gave to this girl. Foxface is the girl tribute from district 5 she doesn’t usually look for trouble so she tries to stay out of the way. She died of nightlock berries she stole from Peeta. Clove: Originally she tried to kill Katniss but Thresh saved her because Katniss tried to save the girl tribute from his district. Rue: This girl reminds Katniss of her little sister Prim. Rue knows her way around plants, animals, and berries. When Rue had a spear shot through her stomach Katniss was devastated. Thresh: Was killed by a career tribute Cato who got angry after Thresh killed the girl tribute from his district. Cato: Was killed by mutts. After Katniss shot an arrow at Cato’s armor he was knocked off the Cornucopia and dropped into a pack of mutts that eventually chewed through his armor.

Protagonist The Protagonist in The Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen she is determined to be a victor in The Hunger Games after she made a promise to her little sister during the reaping when Katniss volunteered to take Prim’s place in The Hunger Games. The entire novel is told by Katniss , who has different feelings on situations than any other character in the book.

Antagonist The Antagonist in The Hunger Games is Panem. Every year two children from each district have to battle to the death against the other tributes. The worst part is that there can only be one survivor. In the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games they allowed there to be 2 survivors if they were from the same district. When it was down to Katniss and Peeta they could have one but no the Gamemakers checked the rulebook and there can only be one victor. So that Peeta & Katniss would have to battle.

Setting This is a map of where districts are in the future. The real location is all of America. This is a list what each district has to offer: District 1. Luxury District 2. Masonry District 3. Technology District 4. Fishing District 5. Power District 6. Transportation District 7. Lumber District 8. Textiles District 9. Grain District 10. Livestock District 11. Agriculture District 12. Coal District 13. Nuclear Weapons

Conflict & Resolution Conflict: A conflict in the story is when Rue died. This was a problem because Katniss made a promise to Prim but Rue is the one that reminded Katniss of Prim so it was like Katniss had failed her sister, and from that moment on Katniss knew that she would have to win the games. Resolution: The resolution to Katniss’ predicament was to win the games. Winning the games sounds like a simple goal but it wasn’t. To win the games Katniss would have to defeat any opponents.

First Major Event The First major event in the story was the reaping. (The reaping is when Effie Trinket chose who was going to compete in the games.) The reaping is where Prim was selected to compete in the games. But instead Katniss volunteered to take Prim’s place in the games since she knew Prim isn’t the type of person that would hurt anyone of such kind. Prim didn’t want Katniss risk her life for her, so Katniss made a promise to Prim that she would win the hunger games.

Second Major Event The second major event that happened in the story is the death of Cato. Most opponents in the games weren’t hard to defeat but Cato was, the only reason was that he was an expert hunter and when Katniss and Peeta tried to kill Cato he was wearing armor that protected his from every attack. How Cato was killed started with mutts chasing Cato as he ran past Katniss and Peeta which lead the mutts to chase everyone. They ran to the Cornucopia where they climbed the seams of the Cornucopia except Peeta was behind since his leg was hurt, but Peeta barley made it there. When they were on the Cornucopia Peeta and Katniss had to work fast and kill Cato to win the games. Since he was wearing armor all Katniss would have to do is hit Cato with an arrow which would make him unbalanced and he would fall into a pack of mutts, and Cato did. The mutts took a long time to chew through Cato’s armor.

Final Major Event The final major event is when Katniss & Peeta won the games. When the announcement that two competitors from the same district could win Katniss & Peeta formed worked together to win the games. When they killed the last competitor they should have won but the Gamemakers checked the rulebook and there could only be one victor. Since Katniss didn’t want to kill Peeta and Peeta didn’t want to kill Katniss they both killed themselves, to do that they both ate nightlock berries at the same time. Before they could do that the announcer said that they won the seventy-fourth annual hunger games.

Essential Question Answer The following is one of the many ethical dilemmas that can be found in a dystopian society, where children of the ages of 12-18 are required to fight: In the beginning of the book, when Katniss volunteers as tribute to be in The Hunger Games, Katniss states that the public didn’t seem really happy if a 12 year old got chosen for the games. This is what Katniss said: “ Somewhere far away, I can hear the crowd murmuring unhappily as they always do when a twelve-year- old gets chosen because no one thinks this is fair.” (pg.21) This shows that whenever a 12 year old is chosen, the public doesn’t agree with the district, and think that it’s unfair.
