Welcome to our 2018 - 19 Revision Evening! General Revision tips Maths GCSE Science GCSE English GCSE (Language and Literature)

Belief Preparation Hard work Support Steps to Success Belief Preparation Hard work Support

Believe

Prepare

Preparing to revise - creating a space Dedicate a space to revision Have enough space to work and to store key materials and books Consider using wall space for revision timetables and posters Calm, uncluttered and without distractions

Preparing to revise - supplies You don’t need much: A highlighter notebooks/ paper Index cards, post its etc may be useful

Work hard

The effect of stress on the brain Stress releases cortisol, which can impede the effectiveness of the brain. This has a particularly strong effect on the male brain Triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response.

How the brain works ... Learning something new triggers neurons in the hippocampus This increases hugely when revising Constantly inundating the hippocampus can mean that you quickly forget newly learnt material

The solution ... Simple repetition over time can strengthen neurons and consolidate patterns Spaced repetition - test after a few hours, a day, a week, two weeks, a month

The solution ... Allowing breaks after 30 minutes of work After taking a break, test and check before moving on to something new

The solution ... Avoid distractions Speech like sounds, even at a low volume, will distract from what you are working on Use apps like Offtime to allow you to avoid the distraction of your smartphone

The solution ... Sleep The brain backs up short term patterns and builds up long term memory

Make full use of all the support available to you
