Jefferson: The Louisiana Purchase

Mississippi River Access to the Mississippi River was important for transportation and trade. 1795 Pinckney Treaty: guaranteed Americans the right to use the Mississippi River.

Mississippi River In 1801 Jefferson discovered that Spain gave the entire Louisiana Territory to France. Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to Paris to try to buy the city of New Orleans.

Troubles in Haiti Surprise, surprise…. Toussaint L’Overture led a revolution in Haiti driving the French out. Why is this important… you ask… Without Haiti as a base the French would have trouble defending Louisiana.

Louisiana Purchase WOW! Napoleon needed money to support his war in Europe so he offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory. Monroe and Livingston bought the territory for 15 million dollars (4 cents an acre). WOW!
