What are Utterson’s two dreams of Hyde? (13) A faceless figure tramples on a girl A faceless figure visits Dr Jekyll when he is sleeping What is the effect of these two dreams? LP Particularly frightening because Hyde is a metaphor for our subconscious desires – what we want to repress, but can’t; the hidden part of ourselves Particularly frightening because we are not safe from it: he finds in our places of safety: our homes, our bedrooms, our beds.

Why are Utterson’s dreams so chilling? How does Stevenson use language to develop the horror of the idea of Hyde?

What is the effect of these two dreams? Highlights key themes of the novel, such as... Emphasises unstoppability of Hyde and how it compels you to “do its bidding” Hyde is a metaphor for our subconscious desires – what we want to repress, but can’t; the hidden part of ourselves we are not safe from it: he finds in our places of safety: our homes, our bedrooms, our beds.

The dream sequence frightens the reader because Hyde is a metaphor for our subconscious desires – what we want to repress, but can’t; the hidden part of ourselves. It is more powerful than us. It is particularly frightening because we are not safe from it: “Hyde” finds in our places of safety: our homes, our bedrooms, our beds.

‘The Origin of the Species’ Published in 1859. The unpalatable theory that man had descended from apes. Stevenson used this controversial idea and wanted to introduce his ideas about the ‘beast in man’ and the attempts to hide, if not subdue, animal passions. Victorian society was strict- you had to hide secret desires in public and indulge them at night.

Jack the Ripper Jack the Ripper killed five prostitutes within two years of Stevenson’s novel being published and at the same time that a dramatised version was playing in the West End. People got confused, could not remember which came first, and some blamed Stevenson for inspiring the murders.
