Unhappy Farmers Mother Nature-drought, grasshoppers Government-Farmers had to pay heavy state and local taxes. Industry protected by tariff Corporations- Trusts built high priced monopolies for all products farmers needed to purchase Railroads-High freight prices charged to farmers to ship their crops Disorganization-Big business took advantage of isolated culture of the farmer The decrease of prices, known as deflation on their crops led to farmers often becoming overcome with debt and eventually bankrupt.

Farmer’s Protest Price on transporting products Vanderbilt owned most of the railroads Shipping costs were expensive for farmers than for other industries Farmers wanted government owned railroad Farmers pay heavy property tax They want factory owners to pay income tax Farmers want unused government land Farmers are not protected by a tariff

Farmer’s Organize The Grange Farmer’s Alliance-first political group This organization led by Oliver H. Kelley, tried to enhance the lives of farmers through social, educational, and fraternal activities. Farmer’s Alliance-first political group This organization, founded in the late 1870’s in Texas, came together to “break the grip of railroads, manufacturers through cooperative buying and selling.
