How to Network Jigar Bhakta January 16, 2018

What is Networking? It’s reaching out to people with whom you share a connection to learn new information. You share a connection to Middlebury with 7,500+ alumni career volunteers on MiddNet. They want to hear from you about your career aspirations and challenges. They also want to know what’s happening on campus: you’ve got something to offer them as well.

Why Network? Around 70% of job opportunities are uncovered through networking. Most job hunters don't know enough about the jobs they are pursuing. Hiring is risky and expensive for employers.

Goals of Networking Gather "insider" career information and advice from people who work  in the career area or company that you've targeted as your interest. Gain referrals (connections) to other people who can also provide career advice and information.

Before you Start Networking Know your strengths and weaknesses, and how to sell both. Identify your career-related interests, skills, and values to establish a meaningful discussion with your networks. Research industries and companies. Identify appropriate contacts in the industries and/or companies that interest you. LinkedIn, MiddNet, professors, family, friends, etc.

Do Not ask for a job Networking is an essential part of your job-search strategy, but asking directly for a job is not effective networking. To ask directly will likely be off-putting to your contact, who might feel put on the spot. Unless the person knows you, why would she be willing to risk her reputation by referring you to a job lead? If you ask directly for a job and if the answer to your question is "no," then the conversation becomes a dead end.

Initial Contact

Elevator Pitch 30 seconds. Max. Things to cover: Your name Year, Major(s)/Minor(s) What you do on campus, and what you did during your summer What you want to do, and—if it’s concise—why you want to do that

Informational Interview They will not quiz you on technical questions. This is the airport test. But, be able to glean important information that you can use in an actual interview that will set you apart from the crowd. It is a conversation, don’t treat it like the Inquisition.

Don’t be weird Remember: these are Middlebury grads. At some point in their past, they were students too. They want to hire someone they can work long hours with, not a nervous wreck. Don’t forget to make it mutual! Take it easy. The nerves won’t help you. Send a concise, memorable (in a good way) thank you email.
