Persuasive Writing

What do you know? What is it? Why is it used? Who uses it? Take a minute and think about what you already know about persuasion or persuasive writing. What is it? Why is it used? Who uses it? How is it used? Where have you seen it? When have you used it?

Definition Persuasive writing is designed to influence the reader to believe or do as the author suggests. The goal of persuasive writing is to convince an audience that a particular position or course of action should be taken.

Persuasive writing … … contains a clear opinion statement and support for that position. … is based on opinions and carefully selected facts. … is all around us!

Reflect! Persuading someone to see my side is like ________ because … Create an analogy that describes what you think persuasion is like. Use one of the following starters to help! Persuading someone to see my side is like ________ because … Persuasive writing is like ________ because… Example: Mrs. Weis thinks that persuading someone to see your opinion is like playing tug of war because you use all of your strength to get the other person to come to your side.

Good writers know that effective persuasive writing contains TAP. T = Topic A = Audience P = Purpose Example: T = new Iphone A = my parents P = for them to buy it for me

In groups . . . Come up with an example of TAP for something. Share with each other. What examples did you come up with? Brainstorm a list.

Pre-write Now, let’s look at how we can organize the information we need so that our persuasive writing stays on-topic, and coherent. Spend your writing workshop time today focusing on the pre-write.

Classwork and Homework You must come in next class with a completed pre-write for your persuasive piece. You must also have written (at minimum) one page of your persuasive draft.
