Burning Fuels – Combustion

C O N No more E than 15 words! T What do you know about carbon fuels? Reflective Learners – think back to what you have recently learnt. Complete the first section of your time review sheet now. No more than 15 words!

Learning Outcomes WHAT Describe an experiment to show combustion of a hydrocarbon. Evaluate the use of different fuels and explain why the amount of fossil fuel being burnt is increasing. WHY Explain the advantages and disadvantages of complete combustion over incomplete combustion. HOW Reflective learners Independent enquirers Team players

Progress Check

Combustion – What is it?

Combustion Combustion is the reaction when a substance burns and reacts with oxygen to produce heat and light energy.

Combustion INCOMPLETE COMPLETE - Not enough - Plenty of oxygen oxygen available available - Soot produced - Carbon dioxide - Dirty flame - Water produced (black/grey) - Carbon monoxide produced

DO NOW: complete your time review wheel sheet. What have you learnt so far? No more than 15 words!

Search for Meaning Activity How might we plan an investigation to test that the products from combustion are carbon dioxide and water? THINK back to previous learning. HINT: Water given off during combustion is a gas. Place a range of equipment in trays for pupils to choose from to plan an investigation. Give them a range of fuels to choose from too.

Demonstrate new Understanding Use the investigation planning sheet to plan your investigation. RECAP key words: Independent Variable - ? Control Variable - ? Dependent Variable - ?

DO NOW: complete your time review wheel sheet. What have you learnt this lesson? Think about including how to test for different gases and how to carry out an investigation. No more than 15 words!
