Mental Health Matters Pedagogy of the Audio Lessons Communicative Language Instruction The focus is on practical language that can be used in real life. Comprehensible Input The first language is used to ensure comprehension and to facilitate independent study. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

Mental Health Matters Pedagogy of the Audio Lessons Limited Number of Target Items per Lesson Research shows that learners can retain about 10 items at a time in short-term memory. Mental Health Matters Print Materials Teacher Guide Lesson Scripts (for teachers/tutors only) Pocket Guides (for students) Download the print materials and the MP3 files from www.osymigrant.org 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters Teacher Testimonials I liked how the audio files were interactive for the students.  Although I sat with them through the activity, they could have done it independently or as a group without assistance.  The audio lesson provided comprehensible input using consistent and repetitive English language… The dialogue was very meaningful for the students.  2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters Teacher Testimonials I liked how I was able to download the file so that I could pull it up later.  This was helpful considering the area we were in had no internet availability.  The duration of the file was good too: just enough time for students to practice what they learned.  This media was a good supplement to our theme and I look forward to using more of the audio files next summer.   2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

Mental Health Matters More Audio Lessons Are Available! Four For Your Health Life Skills Lessons also have supplemental audio lessons: A Visit to the Doctor A Healthy Mouth Can I Get Sick from the Heat? What You Need to Know About Pesticides 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters ACTIVITY: Let’s Start the Conversation! Introducing the Lesson Plans to Classes / Students Words Matter – Plan Them Carefully Be a Friend / Colleague – How do you show that? 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters Tools for Reaching out to Others... It worries me to hear you talking like this... I’ve noticed that you haven’t been acting like yourself lately. Is something wrong? Is everything okay? How can I help? 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters What else can you do? Develop health education and outreach materials and programs. Help establish portable medical records. Work with mobile medical units. Line up transportation services. Help establish translation services. Increase collaboration with other agencies serving migrant populations. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters Live Well... Maintain control over living well. Find a routine that works for you that includes a health diet, exercise and regular sleep patterns. Stay close to your support network. Engage family, friends, teammates and your faith community. Think about joining an online community. Be realistic and mindful of your needs and know your limits 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event Mental Health Matters Live Well... Try staying away from drugs and alcohol. This is not always easy, so find strategies that work. Using drugs or alcohol to feel better is harmful to you. If you use alcohol or drugs, be honest and tell your therapist or doctor because it affects your care plan. Stay positive. Surround yourself with positive messages, people and activities. This will help you feel better. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event
