Europeans Explore the East Europeans had not been completely isolated from the rest of the world before the 1400’s Portugal took the leading overseas exploration in part due to strong government support. The Muslims and Italians controlled the trade of goods from East to West. Beginning around 1600, the English and Dutch began to challenge Portugal’s dominance over the Indian Ocean trade.

Europeans Explore the East Cont. The Dutch seized both the port of Malacca and the valuable Spice Islands from Portugal. Throughout the 1600s, the the Netherlands increased its control over the Indian Ocean trade. With so many goods traveling to the Netherlands, it became the leading commercial center. The Dutch ruled much of Indonesia and had numerous trading posts in Asian countries.

The Ming Dynasty In 1514, China had become the dominant power in the region under the rule of Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644) Ming rulers would not allow outsiders from distant lands threaten the peace and prosperity the had brought to China following the end of Mongol rule Hongwu, the son of a peasant,commanded the rebel army that drove the Mongols out of China in 1368 Hongwu continued to rule from the former Yuan capital of Nanjing in the south

China Rejects European Outreach China use a campaign that helped them generate nationalism This campaign was called “Asia for Asians.”

Daily Life In Ming And Qing China Greater rice production, along with the general peace and prosperity of the 1600s and 1700s, ushered in a better life During this time the population doubled, it reached morte than 300 million in 1800. During the Qing Dynasty irigation and the use of fertilezer increased. The culture of early modern china was based mainly on traditional forms.

Strong Leaders Take Control In 1467,civil war shattered Japan’s feudal system. The country collapsed into chaos A violent era of disorder lasted from 1467 to 1568 Warrior chieftains called daimyo became lords in a new kind of Japanese feudalism Rival daimyo fought each other for territory

Japan Limits Western Contacts One leader the brutal and ambitious Oda Nobunaga, defeated his rivals and seized the imperial capital Kyoto in 1568. Nobunaga’s best general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, continued his fallen leader’s mission. Ieyasu founded the Tokugawa Shogunate, Which would continue until 1867. Townspeople attended Kabuki theater.

Men play all roles in Noh and Kabuki dramas. Haiku is a 5-7-5-syllable, 3-line verse. In Japan, as in China, Confucian values influenced ideas about society. By the mid-1700s, Japan began to shift from rural to an urban society.
