Energy, Friction & Efficiency.  Energy = the ability to do work  When work is done, energy is used  Work is the transfer of energy.
Energy Energy is a quantity that measures the ability to cause change in an object or system. We get energy from the changes in food when it is digested.

Energy. Today we will: 1.Define energy, work and the principle of conservation of energy 1.List different forms of energy transfer 2.Name units related.
Unit C Energy Flow in Technological Systems.  Every object involved in energy transfers (system) must use some form of energy  Energy is the ability.
Work Work done is a measure of the energy transferred. E.g. when lifting a pencil I do work against the earth’s gravity force, energy has been transferred:

Work = work is done when a net force on an object causes it to move a distance W = Fd Or Work (measured in joules) = Force (N) times Distance (m) Is work.
ENERGY! And Energy Transmission. Lets first review Work  Work = Force (N) x Distance  In every simple machine that we have seen, when someone does work.
Heat = mass X change in temp X specific heat 1.10 g X 33 o C X 0.90 J/g o C = 297 J g X  T X 0.50 J/g o C = 5275 J 1.25  T = 5275 – divide both.
Unit 5: Work, Power and Energy. Work Work is done when a force causes a change in motion of an object, or work is a force that is applied to an object.
Doing work.
Work, Energy, & Power. Work Work (in science) is calculated by multiplying the force by the distance through which the force is applied. W (Joule) = F.
ENERGY. Potential energy is energy due to position. Systems or objects with potential energy are able to exert forces (exchange energy) as they change.

Efficiency

When you lift an object the chemical energy from your muscles goes to the object as gravitation potential energy, how much depends on the weight of the object and how high you lift it. Weight is measured in newtons (N). 1kilogram = 9.8N (kg*m/s²). Energy is measured in joules (J). The energy needed to lift 1N 1 metre high = 1 joule.

Energy supplied = useful energy + wasted energy.

Efficiency = useful energy OUT *100 total energy put IN The efficiency of a process describes how well energy or power is converted from one form into another. IT IS HOW WELL ENERGY IS CONVERTED FROM ONE FORM TO ANOTHER Efficiency = useful energy OUT *100 total energy put IN Efficiency is measured as a PERCENT

For example, an electric motor is used to lift an object For example, an electric motor is used to lift an object. The object has 60J of gravitational potential energy when the motor is given 200J of electrical energy. Efficiency = 60J (useful energy out) 200J (total energy in) = .3 * 100 = 30% efficient

A light bulb transfers 15J of light energy for every 100J of electrical energy what is its efficiency? 15% A washing machine uses 300J of electrical energy but only 100J is useful energy, what is its efficiency? 33% A television produces 20J of light and sound energy together but is supplied with 80J of electricity how efficient is it? 25%

How high a mountain could you climb with the energy in just one Snickers candy bar?  1 food Calorie = 4,187 J 1 Snickers = 250 Cal 1,569.6m or about 1mile

How much energy is stored in 1 pint of ice cream? 1 food Calorie = 4,187J 1 pint = 960 food Calories 4,002,000J

The energy efficiency is of the human in this figure is about 8%! Energy Flow and Systems The (output) work done against gravity when climbing a mountain. The energy efficiency is of the human in this figure is about 8%!
