A Map Grid and Index
Squares formed by the grid are marked with letters and numbers.
On some maps, the letters run across the top and the numbers run down the side.
Grids help people locate specific things easier on a map.
Vocabulary Words
grid – a pattern of lines that form squares
Index – an alphabetical listing of place names on a map and the grid squares in which they are found
Physical map – a map that shows natural landforms and waterways on Earth’s surface
South Pole – the point on the Earth located at 90°south latitude, where the lines of longitude meet.
