THE “MOLE” A Mole (mol)  is a unit of measurement used for counting very small things (atoms, molecules, etc.) A mole of something is similar to a dozen.
Presentation transcript:

How many Skittles are in the jar?

We live in a quantitative world. We like to measure and count everything.

What are some ways we can quantify matter?

How can we “count” something without literally counting the items? What are some other ways we can measure items?

We buy and count things by the dozen.

We can measure it by the volume.

We can quantify something by measuring its mass.

Measuring We can measure the same items in several ways. Examples. l dozen apples (by count) 3 lbs of apples (by mass) 1 bushel of apples (by volume)

We measure matter the same way By count----- 1 mole = 6.02 x 10 23 atoms By mass------- 1 mole = ? grams By Volume----- 1mole = 22.4 Liters.
