Fig 1 Experimental protocol. The preparation of each animal lasted approximately 45 min. MCAo was maintained for 2 h, followed by reperfusion. The following day (24 h), infarcts were revealed by TTC staining. Four groups were studied which differed according to the anaesthetic drug used (halothane or desflurane) and the duration of anaesthesia, as shown. All anaesthetics were delivered in oxygen:nitrous oxide (30:70%).
