Page 2 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers This Audience Comprises a mix of Technical and Commercial people Scope of this presentation Avoid intricate details on technology (report to the test result) Industry Test activities Objectives Communicate key concepts for testing IPv6 Emphasize benefits of Benchmark test events based on Beijing Internet Institute test event October/December 2002 Introduction

Page 3 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers Industry Activity Summary Test Bed: 6BONE Test Lab: BII, UNH, … IPv6 Core Router Benchmark Test event Nov/Dec 2002 organized by BII Interop event: TAHI, ETSI PlugTest Benefits of Conformance/Interop Event: Highlight RFC inconstancies, implementation interoperability issues,… Benefits of Benchmark event: Strengthen confidence for deployment, determine impact on existing services,…

Page 4 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers Test Bed of BII test event – Nov/Dec 2002 IPv6 test event for IPv6 Core Routers organized by Beijing Internet Institute Nov/Dec 2002 Test Plan Summary: Conformance, Interoperability and Performance Results available at BII web site – contact Hua Ning Test Bed: 4 Router manufacturers Test Tool: Agilent RouterTester Goal: bring a level of confidence for ISP to deploy IPv6, highlight implementation non-conformed to RFC and interoperability issues between different Router Manufacturers

Page 5 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers IPv6 Conformance Benefits GOAL: Conform to RFC, first step before Interoperability testing e.g. test Case bgp4P_rfc_2858_11 Section: RFC 2858, Section 2, page 5: Description: "An UPDATE message that carries the MP_REACH_NLRI must also carry the ORIGIN and the AS_PATH attributes (both in EBGP and in IBGP exchanges). Moreover, in IBGP exchanges such a message must also carry the LOCAL_PREF attribute. If such a message is received from an external peer, the local system shall check whether the leftmost AS in the AS_PATH attribute is equal to the autonomous system number of the peer than sent the message. If that is not the case, the local system shall send the NOTIFICATION message with Error Code UPDATE Message Error, and the Error Subcode set to Malformed AS_PATH". Result: Four SUTs failed the tests. SUTs failed to send a notification if Update Message didnt contain the most-left AS number. Suggestion: Result to be shared with the IETF Inter-Domain Routing Working Group for comment. SUT

Page 6 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers IPv6 Interoperability Benefits GOAL: next step after Conformance testing – Proof of Concept for ISP that different Router Implementation will work together – Not locked with Proprietary implementation E.g. OSPFv3 DR/BDR election Process Results: Routers ready to be deployed E.g. iBGP4+ Full Mesh connection Results: One router can not build Multi-hop iBGP session SUT 2SUT 4SUT 3SUT 1

Page 7 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers IPv6 Performance Benefits GOAL: Are IPv6 routers ready to be deployed? What are their performance? Are the performance of the IPv4 services impacted? How much could we stress the Control Plane? E.g. Sustainable Throughput of OC-48 POS Port at Packet Size 64 bytes with different Percentage of IPv4 and IPv6 Traffic

Page 8 Conformance, Interoperability and Stress test methodologies for IPv6 Core Routers Test Case: Journal Of Internet test Methodologies Test Plan: IPv6 Test Plan Test tool: Agilent RouterTester for IPv6 conformance/interoperability/performance User and Control Plane (BGP4+/OSPFv3/ISISv6/RIPng) Agilent Technologies IPv6 testing test capabilities: Can do IPv6 User and Control Plane RouterTester emulates core, metro/edge and enterprise routers. This test equipment is used by the majority of NEMs (System QA and POC labs) Also used by many SPs (Network Evaluation labs). For more info: or contact Methodologies + Tools
