Digital Footprint Matters! Show the video, “Digital Footprint” from Common Sense Media. Click image to View Video Image Source: Common Sense Media, Digital Footprint video

Digital Footprint Matters! Your digital footprint is Persistent: Lasting a long time, if not forever. Just like the information you post online! Your digital footprint can be viewed by an Invisible Audience: Anyone who can see information about you or posted by you online. EVERYONE!!! Define the terms PERSISTENT and INVISIBLE AUDIENCE

Digital Footprint Matters! Everything you do online makes up your ____? DIGITAL FOOTPRINT Everything you do can be searched, copied, saved, passed on, and seen by everyone in your INVISIBLE AUDIENCE. EVERYTHING! Explain that everything a person does online makes up their DIGITAL FOOTPRINT and can be seen by ANYONE and EVERYONE!

Digital Footprint Matters! I need your help! Two middle school students want to complete their service hours by helping in the library but I can only have one student helper Explain that students are about to help evaluate candidates for a library helper.

Digital Footprint Matters! Your job is to: Look over the profiles for two candidates. Decide which candidate should be the library helper based on the positive and negative impressions left by their digital footprint Pitch to ME which candidate should get to be the library helper Students will be broken into groups of 3-4 students and hand each group the “Candidate Profiles” (Handouts). Show students the “Feedback Form” Handout and explain to students that they need to examine the digital footprints of each candidate in order to determine which one would be best to be a library helper. Allow each group 10 minutes to make their choice Allow each group to present their choice.

Digital Footprint Matters! Now you know what information on your digital footprint can make a positive or negative impression to others Complete a poster explaining A definition of digital footprint Dos and Don’ts of things to post online Have students complete the My Digital Footprint Handout in order to share what information they want to make up their digital footprint.

Let’s review. Did we… Discuss what it means to have a digital footprint? Examine how a person’s digital footprint can determine how other people see them? Describe what you want your digital footprint to look like? Review lesson objective and review the questions on this page, having students reflect on what they learned.
