Success Starter Write 3 classroom rules or procedures discussed yesterday. Get out 2 sheets of paper. Remember your homework (signed syllabus and parent letter) should be placed on your desk!

Transformations, Congruence, and Similarity Unit 1 Transformations, Congruence, and Similarity

Congruent vs Similar Figures

Congruent Figures Congruent figures have the same shape and same size.

Example Are these figures congruent? Why or why not? 1. 3. 2.

Similar Figures Similar figures have the same shape but different size

You Try On a sheet of paper, draw two examples of similar figures. Be ready to explain why they are similar and not congruent.

Introduction to Transformations A transformation is the movement of a figure such that the size and the shape of the figure remains the same. After a transformation is performed, figures are still congruent (same shape and size).

Introduction to Transformations https://www.brainpop.com/math/geometryandm easurement/transformation/ Pay attention to the characteristics of the three types of transformations discussed in the video.

Rotation KEY WORD: TURN

Translation KEY WORD: SLIDE

Reflection KEY WORD: FLIP

PRACTICE TIME!!! DRAW A COORDINATE PLANE. BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR X- AXIS AND Y-AXIS. ALSO LABEL YOUR QUADRANTS. First demonstrate the different transformations using the document camera. Pass out shapes and have students practice on their coordinate plane.

Identifying Transformations You Try Determine which type of transformation (rotation, translation, or reflection) is being performed in each problem. 1. 2.

3. 4.
