Paper 1: Medicine in Britain c1250-Present Day Exam preparation Our learning objectives: To describe techniques for answering exam questions To produce a revision guide to aid your revision STARTER… What questions/concerns do you have about the exam?

Medicine in Britain: c1250-Present Day Historical Environment: the Western Front

Q1: Describe two features… Q1: Describe two features of the support trench system on the Western Front Possible features: Support trenches were a few hundred yards behind the front line Provided additional supplies and men in case of attack Support trenches were safer than the front line Support trenches were rarely targeted by enemy snipers Support trenches were often in better conditions than the front line They were less likely to have been hit by artillery

Q2(a): How useful are sources… Q2(a): How useful are Source A and B for an enquiry into the problems performing operations on the Western Front? Explain your answer, using the sources and your own knowledge Context Comment (NOPA) Content

Q2(b): How could you follow up… Q2(b): How could you follow up Source B to find out more about the problems in performing operations on the Western Front? You much give the question you would ask and they type of source you could use. Suggestions: Detail in Source B I would follow up… “quote” Type of sources: eg. Army records about blood storage Question I would ask: “question that isn’t given from source” eg. Why were transfusions a problem? Help my question: eg. would help to see if the problem was about transfusion or quantity of blood available Question and sources have to be linked to the follow up detail!

Q3: Explain one way… Q3: Explain one way in which ideas about the cause of disease were similar in the 14th and 17th Centuries (4 marks) Possible answers: People’s reactions were based on religion eg. Fasting and praying in both plagues Religious ideas – eg. Flagellation in 1348 and ‘Lord have mercy’ in 1665 In both epidemics, people tried to purify the air and smell sweet herbs Believed in miasma theory eg. Burning fires to prevent bad air

Q4: Explain why… Q4: Explain why there was rapid change in the treatment of illness in Britain during the C20th: You may use the following: Magic bullets High-tech treatment You must use information of your own (12 marks) Possible answers: Role of science in discovering Salvarsan 606 as a magic bullet led to new medicines Government funding and the role of technology in the mass production of drugs Research teams were important for scientists with specialisms to share ideas Establishment of the NHS meant improved access to treatment New technologies made better diagnosis possible, leading to earlier intervention Attitudes towards govt action changes, the view that govt had a responsibility to take action

Q5 or Q6: How far do you agree… Q5 or Q6: ‘Jenner’s vaccinations was a major breakthrough in the prevention of disease during c1700-c1900.’ How far do you agree? You may use the following: Cowpox Chlorea You must include your own knowledge (16 marks + 4 SPaG) Possible answers: Jenner’s vaccinations was the first specific prevention for a disease Only prevention before was inoculation, but this had problems, so wasn’t major. Jenner’s vaccinations succeeded in preventing the major killer disease of the period Jenner was willing to offer free vaccinations so all groups could receive protection from smallpox Many opposed vaccinations, had limited impact until govt enforcement 1853-1871 Did not change preventive measures for all diseases – during cholera epidemics people still believed miasma John Snow – 1854 Broad Street Pump

Revision Using the textbook and your notes, create a revision guide: Create a poster, leaflet, revision guide etc to demonstrate Medicine c1250-present day: Make sure you include: What they believed caused illness/diseases How they tried to prevented and treated the sick The changes/continuities which took place The factors that influenced Medieval Medicine (science & technology, individuals, communication, government action etc)

Plenary Any questions you still have about the exam? Any questions about anything you’re not sure on (topic/individual/technique etc)? Today and Thursday there will be a revision session if you want to attend!
