Backgroud In current spec framework for 11ba[1], the rules are defined as follows: The AP can send a Trigger Frame in 11ax to solicit response frames from one or more STAs after sending a wake-up packet to the STA(s). After AP sends a unicast wake-up packet to a STA, AP waits for a timeout interval If AP receives any transmission from the STA through primary connectivity radio after the preparation period, then the wake-up packet transmission is successful Otherwise, the wake-up packet transmission fails, and AP may retransmit the wake-up packet to the STA 802.11ba spec shall define a mechanism to wake up multiple WUR mode STAs (e.g., multi-user wake-up frame) Solicited/ triggered by the AP to respond to the wake-up packet through primary connectivity radio ? Unsolicitedly respond to the wake-up packet through primary connectivity radio by contending the medium using EDCA and transmitting any frame to the AP?

Motivation The efficiency of wake up procedure needs to be considered When only one or just a few WUR STAs is (are) signaled to wake up, less channel contention might happen due to random backoff and different wakeup time channel access for acknowledgement using EDCA is supposed be more efficient When more WUR STAs are signaled to wake up at the same time, the channel contention might become worse triggered-based or scheduled acknowledgement from WUR STAs would be more efficient It is more efficient for AP to manage the access control mechanism that WUR STAs use to acknowledge the wakeup signal AP knows the medium condition better AP should have more control over the medium to utilize the resource better It is more power efficient for WUR STAs to acknowledge the wake up packet successfully with less effort with information of contention situation High efficient contention if less waked-up STAs Less contention collision if triggered by AP when many WUR mode STAs in different wake-up channels are waked up simultaneously and/or on slightly different time

Analysis WUR mode power management operation should be considered when discussing the way for an WUR mode STA to acknowledge the Wake-up signal An WUR mode STA transits from doze state to awake state when receiving a wake-up signal In awake state, based on current PM and U-APSD operation, an WUR mode STA can only send a PS-Poll or QoS Null/QoS data (if U-APSD supported) to indicate that it is awake before receiving any data from the AP Should we add one more way to allow the AP to schedule the acknowledgement from the WUR STAs in awake state to reduce the channel access collision? Wake-up packet should indicate which way to send acknowledgement to the wake-up packet for the WUR mode STA in awake state AP can indicate that it will send a QoS Null/QoS data/trigger to the WUR STA after waiting for a preparation period When the AP wakes up multiple WUR mode STAs, it is better for AP to control the medium access AP can also indicate that it will not send any trigger to the WUR STA so that the WUR STA shall use the default AC to contend the medium. The default AC can be AC-VO When the AP wakes up single or a few WUR mode STAs, the WUR mode STA can contend the medium using EDCA with higher priority. Eg. AC-VO

Introduction 11-17/695 “WUR acknowledgement Indication” has been discussed during May, 2017 F2F meeting Some comments suggest to reuse the current 802.11 scheme for the primary connectivity radio of an WUR device to acknowledge the wake-up packet Considering the power management operation in 802.11, different ways to send acknowledgement to the wake-up packet are discussed In this proposal, further consideration on WUR acknowledgement Indication is discussed

Proposal After receiving the wake-up packet, the WUR mode STAs transit from WUR doze state to WUR awake state An indication is carried in the wake-up packet to indicate whether or not a trigger will be sent to trigger the acknowledgement When AP indicates that a trigger will be sent after the wake-up packet The WUR mode STAs transiting to WUR awake state shall wait within a predefined time interval for being triggered without actively contending the medium. If the WUR mode STAs in WUR awake state fails to receive the trigger frame after the predefined time interval, then the WUR mode STAs could start the channel access using EDCA using AC_BE. When AP indicates that no trigger will be sent after the wake-up packet The WUR mode STAs transiting to WUR awake state can start the channel access using EDCA using AC_VO.

Conclusion The ways of acknowledgement for Wake-up packet are discussed. We suggest that AP indicate the way of acknowledgement for Wake-up packet in order to have better utilization of the resource.

Straw Poll 1 Do you support adding the following to 11ba SFD? An indication may be carried in the unicast/multi-user wake- up packet to indicate whether a frame will be sent to trigger the acknowledgement. Y: N: A:

Straw Poll 2 Do you support adding the following to 11ba SFD ? When the wake-up packet indicates not to send a frame for triggering the acknowledgement, the WUR mode STAs can contend the medium using AC_VO Y: N: A:

Motion #1 Move to add the following to 11ba SFD: An indication shall be carried in the wake-up packet to indicate whether a frame will be sent to trigger the acknowledgement. Y: N: A:
