Treaty of Versailles: A Flawed Peace

Setting the Stage The German Kaiser has surrendered. The Great War is over after years of war and death. Much of the land is devastated and billions have been spent. The victorious members meet at the Palace of Versailles to determine the treaty terms. Their decisions at this meeting will have long lasting implications for the future.

What countries were there? Clemenceau France THE BIG FOUR! Orlando Italy Wilson U.S. Lloyd George G.B.

What the Europeans wanted Punish Germany Strip Germany of its ability to make war Including removing weapons Protection against future attacks

What President Wilson (USA) Wanted Created Fourteen Points plan GOAL: TO END ALL WARS Some ideas: Self determination (self rule for all colonies) End to secret treaties Limit on weapons Creation of a League of Nations an international peace keeping organization

CM Pair Share The treaty the Europeans wanted can be described as _____________________________________________ _______________________________. However, President Wilson wanted _________________________  ___________________________________. I agree with ______________________ because ________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________.

The Allies Response Britain and France did not agree with Wilson’s peace plan They wanted to strip Germany of its ability to make war France and England lost about 1 million men each and wanted to see Germany suffer These differences resulted in arguments between the Allies but they are eventually able to create a compromise which became the Treaty of Versailles

Terms of The Treaty of Versailles Of President Wilson’s Fourteen Points, the only one realized was the creation of the League of Nations The US did not join… Punished Germany Germany lost territory Severe restrictions on its military Germany had to take full responsibility for the war known as the War Guilt Clause Germany had to pay reparations (damages) caused by the war

Illustrate Germany’s Four Punishments

Lost Territory, and New Nations Remained the Same - United States Gained Territory – Britain & France Lost Territory Germany Austria-Hungary Ottoman turned into Turkey & lost territory Russia Created new countries Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania

._____________ ._______________ Which countries lost land? ._____________ ._______________ Which countries gained land? B. _____________ List at least three new countries created.

Results of the Treaty of Versailles The U.S. rejected the treaty They did not join the League of Nations which weakened the organization Did not want to get dragged into another war America negotiated their own treaty with the Central Powers “European” war Germany felt extreme bitterness with their treatment Especially the war guilt clause This anger would eventually lead to WWII Africa and Asia were upset that they did not get their independence The League of Nations fail - lacked real power and could not solve world problems
