Unit 7: Fitness testing for sport and exercise

UNIT 7 P1 describe one test for each component of physical fitness, including advantages and disadvantages M1 explain the advantages and disadvantages of one fitness test for each component of physical fitness

What parameters do we test in football Strength Muscular strength is defined as the ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert force to overcome the most resistance in one effort. Power is defined as the amount of work performed per unit of time. Speed (Distance/ Time) Body composition- Body fats, Weight, Height etc. Muscular endurance is defined as the ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert force to overcome a resistance many times Flexibility: the capacity of a joint or muscle to move through its full range of motion. Flexibility is specific to a particular movement or joints, and the degree of flexibility can vary around the body. - Aerobic Endurance cardiovascular endurance, aerobic fitness, or stamina, is the ability to exercise continuously for extended periods without tiring.

TASK Can you define the seven main areas that we test in football with a practical example for each.

What sort of tests are there and what do they test?

Why do we test?

Strength 1rm/ 3rm Bench press Back Squat Front Squat Chins Advantages and disadvantages of different tests: eg cost, time, equipment requirement, facility requirements, skill level of person carrying out test, issues with test validity, issues with test reliability

strength

Aerobic Endurance MSFT (Bleep Test) Yo-yo test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwYx62e2VJI Advantages and disadvantages of different tests: eg cost, time, equipment requirement, facility requirements, skill level of person carrying out test, issues with test validity, issues with test reliability

Aerobic Endurance

Muscular endurance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPzDNtUX03A Press-up test Sit-up test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPzDNtUX03A Advantages and disadvantages of different tests:

Speed Advantages and disadvantages of different tests: Is often measured using straight line speed over 10m and 30m It is normally done with timing gates to get exact times, averages can be given as well as top scores to outline players maximal speeds. This can also be completed with stop watches as long as the recorders are switched on! Advantages and disadvantages of different tests:

Speed

Power CMJ Squat jump http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_AyVPdUVAU CMJ, Squat Jump shows rate of force production, how much power can you produce quickly! (hopefully will be able to do this!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK11KovyaP8 Advantages and disadvantages of different tests:

Body composition http://www.linear-software.com/online.html Body fat % This is calculated using a set of callipers, skin folds are taken from various sites (4 or 7) This is then put through a calculation along with their age to give a body fat % Body height, Body weight http://www.linear-software.com/online.html

Flexibility Sit and Reach test Flexibility is one of the main fitness components in football good flexibility is an important part of the overall fitness profile. Good flexibility is also important for injury prevention. Sit and Reach test
