First Shots and the Two Sides

Fort Sumter South takes over several forts in the South Surround Northerners at Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC Lincoln sends message that he is sending supplies and will not fire, leaves the decision in South’s court

The South fires on the fort for a day and half until it falls –first shots of the Civil War Only one killed, cannon falls on him Lincoln calls for army of volunteers N. Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia secede Western counties of VA decide to stay with north, WVA formed

Choosing Sides South chooses Richmond, VA for it’s capital, North’s is DC– less than 100 miles apart 4 border states: had slavery but don’t secede, Missouri: controls Miss. River Kentucky: controls Ohio River Maryland: controls DC Delaware: railroads and ports

Lincoln doesn’t want to tick off these states Did use force to keep them in Union though These states don’t leave, but have many people join southern army Tennessee seceded but many fought for the North Some families torn apart choosing sides in the war, some members fight for N, some fight for S

Goals and Strategies North Goals: Make southern states rejoin Ending slavery becomes goal later Strategies: 1. Blockade to stop trade and supplies 2. Control of entire Miss. River 3. Take Richmond Together these become known as the Anaconda Plan

South Goals: Get recognition as independent country Keep way of life with slavery South Strategies: Play defensive/ defend homeland Hope North would tire of fighting Hope England and France would help– cotton diplomacy
