Eng 9: P.O.V./Tone with “The Hit Man”

Bell work Have your independent reading & journal out on your desk. While I take attendance I will be checking journals and making sure that you have chosen a novel for this months book response!!!!! Please read while I conference with individuals.

Objective: I can analyze and manipulate point of view to control the tone of a piece. I can identify P.O.V in a text I can identify tone in a text

What do you see in the picture? Colors? Is it just a part of a whole?

What do you see now?

Does seeing the whole picture make a difference? Point of View Does seeing the whole picture make a difference? Point of view does the same thing to a story. What you see and how you see it are filtered through the narrator, or the one telling the story.

Point of View: First Person IN THE ACTION In the first person point of view, the narrator participates in the action of the story. I, me

Point of View: Third Person, Limited The narrator tells the story from the view of only one character outside of the action in the story. He, she

Tone The attitude a writer takes towards an audience, subject ,or character Humorous Sad Friendly

We will read the selection twice. “The Hit Man” We will read the selection twice. Once aloud, once silently & independently

Daily Notebook Response In your journal create a list of words from the story you do not know. Then tell me what your reaction to the story is? Be specific with your examples.

Writer’s Craft Moves Organization – Boyle knows this story is confusing and helps the reader by providing sub-titles. POV – Third person creates distance which contributes to tone of dark humor Humor with dark material is deliberate choice. Why? Allusion – 3 headed dog???

Closer look at POV First Date The girl’s name is Cynthia. I pull up in front of her apartment in my father’s hearse. (My father, who I loathe and abominate, is a mortician.) At breakfast, my father had slapped the cornflakes from my bowl. I threatened to waste my father. I did not, no doubt restrained by consideration of filial loyalty and the deep-seated taboos against patricide that permeate the universal unconscious.) Cynthia’s father has silver sideburns and plays tennis. He responds to my knock, expresses surprise at my appearance. I take Cynthia by the elbow, press a twenty into her father’s palm, and disappear into the night.

Your Turn/Bell Work Rewrite “Early Years,” “Father’s Death,” and “Moods” using first person. (Pay attention to verb tense.) How did that POV shift affect the tone? Does it change your impression of the Hit Man? How? Does it change the humor?

Plot A series of related events that make up a story or drama What happens in a story

Parts of Plot Exposition: Characters and their conflicts are presented and vital background info is given Rising action occurs when characters take steps to deal with the conflict Climax: most intense point in a plot Falling Action/Resolution: problems in story are solved and story is closed
