Presentation transcript:

Chemistry – Nov 16, 2018 Do Now – Get a Beanium sample and a Beanium Lab Handout. Start sorting beans into white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Your judgement call for all beans. Work in Pairs. When done with the front side of the Beanium activity, pick up the Atom Phet activity and use your phone to access the website for the app. Complete Parts 1-3 in class. Part 4 for homework. Work individually. Objective – Beanium Lab Activity Build an Atom Phet Activity Get out Atoms, Ions and Mass Worksheet Back only for Hmk check

Homework Review Show work for 5 and 6: (Mass)(Ab) + (Mass)(Ab) (Ab% in decimal form….move decimal 2 to left) 5. Li = 6.941 amu Agrees with Periodic Table 6. Ar = 39.947 amu Agrees with Periodic Table 7. 43.38% Na 8. 52.9% Al and 47.1 % O 9. 264 g carbon dioxide

Beanium Lab Beanium is an element consisting of three kinds of beans (isotopes) White chocolate beans Milk chocolate beans Dark chocolate beans You will receive a sample of Beanium that is a mixture of isotopes and become a “bean counter” You will measure the percent abundance of each type of bean and the average mass of each type of bean (% abundance = # white/total # x 100) You will use this percent abundance and average mass data to calculate the average atomic mass of Beaninum.

Exit Slip - Homework Exit Slip: Clean up your lab space with a zero impact from when you came in. No beans on the floor. Broom and dust pan available. What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.) Beanium Lab Activity questions (no lab report) Complete the Build an Atom Phet Activity Parts 1-4 What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) Read Holt p84 - 88
