Graphing in the coordinate plane The Plot Thickens

The two number lines are called the axes. A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. The two number lines are called the axes.

The horizontal (goes left to right) axis is called the x-axis. A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. The horizontal (goes left to right) axis is called the x-axis.

The vertical axis (goes up and down) is called the y-axis. A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. The vertical axis (goes up and down) is called the y-axis.

The two axes divide the coordinate plane into four quadrants. A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. The two axes divide the coordinate plane into four quadrants.

The point where the axes intersect is called the origin. A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. The point where the axes intersect is called the origin. It’s coordinate is (0,0)

Ch. 3-4 Graphing in the Coordinate Plane Write the following information on graph  on first page of your notes Ch. 3-4 Graphing in the Coordinate Plane y-axis -A coordinate plane is a grid formed by the intersection of two number lines. You can use a coordinate plane to locate and name points Quadrant II Quadrant I This point is on the ordered pair (-5, 3) x-axis -5 is the x-coordinate 3 is the y-coordinate origin Quadrant III Quadrant IV COORDINATE PLANE

Write the following information on graph  on first page of your notes The Quadrants The axes separate the coordinate plane into four parts, called quadrants I II III IV

Write the following information on graph  on first page of your notes The Quadrants The coordinates of the points in the four quadrants have the following signs: II I (-,+) (+,+) (-,-) (+,-) III IV

Don’t write just answer the questions out loud What Quadrant????? (3,-2) (-5, -5) (-1,2) (6,5) (-1, -2) (-2,3) (5,5) (2,-1)

Write the following information on graph  on first page of your notes Plot the points A(3,-2) B(-5, -5) C(-1,2) D(6,5) E(-1, -2) F(-2,3) G(5,5) H(2,-1)

Write the following information on graph  on first page of your notes Plot the points I(-2,6) J(-1, 5) K(-2,1) L(-4.2) M(4, -2) N(2,3) O(0,5) P(2,0)

Write on next page of notes  An ordered pair gives the location of a point on a coordinate plane. The first number tells how far to move right (positive) or left (negative) from the origin. The second number tells how far to move up (positive) or down (negative). The numbers in an ordered pair are called coordinates. The first number is called the x-coordinate. The second number is called the y-coordinate. The ordered pair for the origin is (0,0).

Don’t write just answer the questions out loud Give the coordinates of the point. X From the origin, X is 4 units right and 1 unit down. (4, –1)

Don’t write just answer the questions out loud Additional Example 2B: Locating Points on a Coordinate Plane Give the coordinates of the point. Y Don’t write just answer the questions out loud From the origin, Y is 2 units left, and 3 units down. (–2, –3)

Don’t write just answer the questions out loud Additional Example 2C: Locating Points on a Coordinate Plane Give the coordinates of the point. S Don’t write just answer the questions out loud From the origin, S is 3 units left, and 3 units up. (–3, 3)

Example 1: Graph each point below and tell which quadrant it is in. a.) A = (-4, 2) b.) B = (3, 5) c.) C = (0, -1) d.) D = (-2, 0) e.) E = (-5, -2) f.) F = (2, -4) B. A. D. E. C. F.

Example 2: Tell the coordinates of each point shown below. (0, 4) Red = Blue = Yellow = Green = Purple = (-3, 2) (1, 1) (-4, 0) (6, -4)

Good Graph vs. Bad Graph When creating a graph on paper, it is very important that you use a ruler, even when using grid paper. Label the x- and y-axes.

Homework Pg. 126 #1-10 all #12-28 even Graph paper is in the closet 

Check It Out! Example 2A Give the coordinates of the point. V From the origin, V is 4 units right and 2 units up. (4, 2)

Check It Out! Example 2B Give the coordinates of the point. Z From the origin, Z is 0 units right, and 4 units up. (0, 4)

Check It Out! Example 2C Give the coordinates of the point. T From the origin, T is 1 unit right, and 3 units down. (1, –3)
