Lesson Goal: Read and analyze a condensed version of the novella, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Outcomes: Be able to . . . 1. Describe the main characters in The Best Christmas Pageant. 2. Summarize the plot in The Best Christmas Pageant. 3. Cite the conflict or conflicts in The Best Christmas Pageant. 4. Explain which characters changed and in what ways. 5. State the theme of The Best Christmas Pageant and support your answer.

Starter #1: If you have never heard of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” you are in for a treat. Today in LA and Lit we are going to read a condensed version of this holiday novella. To make this delightful Christmas story come alive, I’m going to need some readers who can take on character types—readers who can deliver dialogue not like a reader like the actual character he/she is portraying. 

Starter #2: Here are the parts . . . Narrator (daughter of the director) Mother (directing the pageant) Charlie (director’s son) Father (director’s husband) The Herdmans—some tough cookies! Ralph Imogene Leroy Claude Ollie Gladys Miss Philips (social worker) Mrs. McCarthy (church lady) Alice Wendleken (a girl) Mrs. Wendleken (Alice’s mom) Potential “shepherds” for the play: Hobie Carmichael (Charlie’s friend) Another Kid Kid who was honest Mr. Grady (SS Superintendent) Lady on potluck committee Reverend Hopkins (pastor)
