STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering byDesign™ 12/01/2009 Unit 2: Lesson 2 Big Idea: The essence of problem solving is in the creative and carefully documented design of the best solution using the Engineering Design Process. An Engineering Design Journal is use to document each step. Review the BIG IDEA of the Unit with students. © International Technology Education Assoc

Engagement Words to Know STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering byDesign™ Engagement Words to Know 12/01/2009 Constraints- limitations or restrictions Specifications-is an explicit set of requirements, usually involving measurements, to be satisfied by a material, product, or service Tolerances- An acceptable variance from a specified measurement. Used to determine minimum and maximum Load- Forces that are applied to a structure If using one, the teacher can post the Words to Know on a Word Wall. Remind students to fill out Student Resource 1.1.1, “Words to Know” © International Technology Education Assoc Slide #2

Identifying the Problem You and your design team must design and build the tallest straw tower possible. The tower must be able to support the mass of a tennis ball at its highest point.

Engagement Tower Challenge STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering byDesign™ 12/01/2009 Engagement Tower Challenge Design Specifications Material Minimum Maximum Straws 1 50 Tape 0cm 30cm Hot Glue Stick none 1/4” stick MAXIMUM BASE DIMENSION The Base may not be anchored to the table or floor The structure must support the load of a tennis ball at its highest point 30 cm After drawing students respond to the following Students explain why they need the object in their picture. Students analyze how others may need the same object in their picture and how they may use it the same way or differently to complete everyday tasks. Students discuss ways these objects would improve the way they use them to meet their everyday needs. Students prepare to share with the class and make a valid argument for their improved object as being the most wanted. 30 cm © International Technology Education Assoc Slide #4

Grading Rubric Category Above Target At Target Below Target Use of materials Materials properly used. No materials wasted. Evidence of a well thought out design solution prior to construction. Materials used properly but some wasted material. Some evidence of planning prior to construction. Most materials lost, damaged or wasted. Little evidence of planning prior to constructions Team Cooperation/ Participation Group worked very well together. Ideas from all members listed to and respected. Excellent participation. Group works adequately well. For the most part ideas respected and listened to by all members. Group not cooperating. Lack of participation. Construction of Structure/ Design Very well built. Supports the mass of the tennis ball easily at highest point of tower. No leaning or swaying of structure, Structure stands but leans or wobbles when the mass of tennis ball is applied. Will supports the mass of the tennis balls Will not support the mass of the tennis ball.
