What is poetry? What is a poet?

Power of poetry Awake the reader’s interest through a faithfulness to nature Use the power of imagination to colour and interpret events

Poetry of nature: Poems on supernatural themes (Coleridge) Poems on ordinary life (Wordsworth)

supernatural thanks to use of imagination the poet makes supernatural events real. This happens through the ‘suspension of disbelief’.

Ordinary life Through the power of imagination the poet gives new colours and new dignity to ordinary things that become ‘poetry’.

What/who is the poet? In Coleridge’s view the poet is able to melt in his work (through his poetic genius) the general with the specific, the natural with the supernatural.
