The Founding of Rome

After the Fall of Troy Troy falls in approximately 1184 B.C. Aeneas flees Troy with Anchises (father), Ascanius (son) and the Lares & Penates

Aeneas’ Adventures Aeneas goes on an “Odyssey” to found his new city. Adventures include going to the Underworld with the Sibyl and meeting Dido, queen of Carthage

Dido and Carthage Aeneas’ mother, Venus, wants her child to be happy. Juno and Venus conspire. Aeneas and Dido fall in love and spend time in a cave. Dido commits suicide and curses Aeneas and his people Rome and Carthage hate each other

Arrival in Latium Aeneas comes to Latium (King Latinus) Marries the king’s daughter, Lavinia, to ratify a peace treaty War with Turnus, king of the Rutulians The two people unite and become the Latins.

Ascanius Ascanius (Iulus) leaves his father’s city and founds his own, Alba Longa. His son, Silvius, succeeds him. This marks the beginning of the Sylvian dynasty. The dynasty rules in peace for approx. 300 years until Amulius overthrows his brother Numitor

Numitor and Amulius Amulius kills Numitor’s sons and makes his daughter, Rhea Silvia, a vestal virgin. Mars becomes smitten with Rhea Silvia and the twins Romulus and Remus are born. Rhea Silvia is buried alive, twins death by exposure A slave takes pity on them and puts them in a basket down the Tiber

Romulus and Remus Found by a lupa who lost her cubs Suckled by lupa until Faustulus, Amulius’ shepard Romulus and Remus grow up as shepards Hated the king, captured thieves, protected the poor and fought for those mistreated Eventually, punish Amulius for usurping the throne

The Founding of Rome The city offers the crown to R & R. Numitor is restored R and R leave with fugitives, runaway slaves and other outcasts to start their own city The city is built on the Palatine Hill on the Tiber A fight ensues & Romulus kills Remus Rome is born Rome  April 21, 753 B.C.

NO WOMEN???? The city only has men. Party w/ the neighboring Sabines Rape of the Sabine Women N.B. Rape from the word rapio meaning to snatch or steal War between the Romans and Sabines

The War Sabines prepare for battle Tarpeia, agrees to let in the Sabines if they give her the gold armlets they wore Sabine Women get in the middle Sabines and Romans unite

The Reign of Romulus Romans - Palatine Hill/Sabines - Quirinal Hill/Gov’t and admin.- Capitoline Hill. Tatius and Romulus rule jointly until Tatius is killed by neighbors. Then Romulus rules alone while expanding Rome’s land Romulus rules for 38 years Romulus disappears and is said to have gone to be with the deities. Nicknamed Quirinus

Rape of Lucretia Son of last king rape Lucretia, his hostess Tells husband of betrayal and then kills herself Husband avenges death King exiled

Empire Augustus – great-nephew of Caesar and adopted son Avenges Caesar’s death along with Marcus Antonius 1st emperor!
