It is a fad, it won't last like Springboard and Sunrise Unified Administration Symbols Shiny IT solutions attract interest - leads to pressure on IT Prince 2 "The University" Managers in offices No central point for student queries - customer is not really important Change focus on admin not academic We don't change because we are looking for the big one Athena Swan Power Structures Academics are a bit like the chefs in the restaurant Hard to share successes Hierarchical Strong bonds exist between academics and admin staff in departments Academics live and thrive on evidence Org Structure We are an industrial estate with lots of companies and no common purpose Fear Remits - who is doing what? Middle Managers struggle to embed change Managers are not close enough to the action! Our managers are one of the keys Control Systems Policies, reward and development don't fit the new world It is always about SAVINGS and EFFICIENCIES MEASURED IN THE TRADITIONAL WAY Budgets, approvals and PAPER Measures - we are free fall Rituals and Routines In academic departments we lurch from event to event and we have no time to do anything else - feels like 2 jobs! Traditional approach "tell" and "train" We get caught up in the "right" terminology Project Management lies in IT Traditional - everyone in their place We know involving staff works University of Leicester We do too much detail and lose the way Conservative and traditional We want to change
