Presentation transcript:

social cognitive theory – learning that occurs within a social context – certain behaviours are reinforced, discouraged, etc

3 aspects to the theory People learn through observation Mental state matters - just observing something doesn’t guarantee you will learn it = your own mental state and motivation matter Learning in this way does not mean your behavior will definitely change – but it might In order for the learning to stick….. Must be paying ATTENTION Must be able to RETAIN the information Must be able to REPRODUCE the behavior Must be MOTIVATED to imitate the behavior (sometimes reinforcement or punishment can be involved) 3 aspects to the theory

Children See, Children Do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHi2dxSf9hw Children See, Children Do

Do you agree with the phrase “Children See, Children Do”? Are there times when children should not be viewing or exposed to things? Why or why not? Do you think parents should be concerned about things their children view? Why or why not? What can parents do to prevent their children from acting out aggressive behaviour?
