Warm-Up Day 11: 9/2/14 Prefix: bi Definition: two Example: binary: something composed of two parts Using sensory language, describe one of these phots to someone who cannot see them. Tell them what is happening.

WHAT & WHY What: How does Gary Soto use expressive language to reveal the culture of migrant workers? WHY: Because throughout our study of language you will put all your knowledge of mood/tone, sensory language/literary devices, and denotation/connotation together to identify the theme of culture Soto presents.

Social Context of Story: Migrant Workers What is a migrant worker? -anyone who migrates within one country or across many countries for work Is this a popular market? U.S. Department of Labor suggest that approximately 1.3 million U.S. citizens migrate between states, earning their living by working in the agricultural industry. What is life like for the average migrant worker? For the past decade the median income of farmworker families has remained less than $10,000. -usually have lower life-expectancy rates due to poor and dangerous working conditions.

Social Context of Story: Background It is semi-autobiographical: based on his experiences as a migrant farmer, but he has fictionalized the character. Is about child labor in the migrant community: these children do not get to attend school regularly, they often are injured or killed, and they are not protected by labor laws like the rest of children. To get a understanding of this, you are about to watch 2 short documentaries and will complete the worksheets.

Closure After today’s activity, what are your feeling toward migrant workers, particularly that of children? What do you think should be done?
