How To Make A Difference in Your Dissertation? Each section of the dissertation must start on a new page. Avoid using tape, glue, or any kind of adhesive in the dissertation. Plan the study such that the entire study, including dissertation writing, is completed during the training period.

Font & Characters Dark black characters that are consistently clear. The font type should be “Times Roman” and the font size of content should be “12”. The font size for headings can be “12 or 14 Bold”.

Printing Single sided printing is preferred. All typing, print, illustrations, etc., should be done only on one side of the paper.

Spacing Spacing between two lines should be One and half spaced. Make full use of each page without encroaching upon the required margins.

Margins Minimum margins of one and half inch on the left side and one inch on the right side & One inch on the top and bottom of the page must be used throughout the dissertation. Everything, including titles and page numbers, must be inside the margins because several mm of the page shall be trimmed from the page edges when the thesis is bound.

Pagination Except the title page, every page, must be numbered uniformly, including Acknowledgments, Index, graphs, charts, tables and Appendices.

Cover Page Should contain Title, Name of the candidate, Academic Year Name of Student Academic Year Name of Guide Subject Degree Affiliating Degree Should contain Title, Name of the candidate, Academic Year Name of guide, Subject / department Degree for which Dissertation is submitted Affiliating Body

Introduction It is a short summary of the major questions behind your research. Should be short but informative. Should depict what you attempt to recognize through your research and writing.

Introduction Includes answers to the following questions- What is the need of the study? What are the problems that the study shall solve? How is the problem to be solved? Who is going to benefit from the study? NEED OF STUDY

Introduction How will the study benefit the population? What new contributions can be added from the study? What are the limitations of the study? Why are you interested in working on this topic?

Review of Literature Contents of this chapter are based on already published material. This is a review of what is already known hence, the name.

Review of Literature It covers past research, studies and articles from relevant journals, books, newspapers, etc. The most recent literature should also be accessed. Look out for up-to-date references regarding your topic.

Review of Literature Thorough literature review is essential, it indicates that one has rigorously studied the workings done by others on that particular topic. Describe why the findings of the review are important to your research.

Importance of Review of Literature Enables one to find out what research has already been undertaken in the field, what is ‘known’ and what others are investigating or have suggested for research. Helps you in designing the protocol for the study.

Importance of Review of Literature Helps one to understand the history of the topic for research, to know how ideas have developed, changed, appeared and disappeared over time regarding the topic. Permits a broader understanding of your research topic.

Aims & Objectives Depicts the general purpose of the study and what one intends to do in the study. Should be certainly in tune with the title of the study. Should be listed in the order of importance.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES Set them keeping the duration of study in mind. Can be finalised only after a literature survey. Includes what the researcher - Plans to do in his/her work. - Hopes to achieve by researching the subject.

Qualities Of Objectives Objective should be - Clear, - Simple, - Realistic, - Precise, - Achievable, - Relevant, - Time bound & - Few

Methodology - Selection of Sample: Inclusion and exclusion criteria’s (Inclusion criteria: grounds on which the patients were inducted in the study. Exclusion criteria: grounds on which the patients were excluded from the study)

Methodology Data Analysis Plan (softwares, repertories used) - Method of Collection of Data / Data Collection Tools (CT, Investigations) Data Analysis Plan (softwares, repertories used) Assessment criteria’s. Duration of Follow up (once in 15/ 30 days) Categories of results (Improved, Not improved, dropped out)

Case Records Includes :- - Details regarding the cases in the prescribed format. - Minimum 30 cases.

Observations & Results Here, the data has to be organized properly, category-wise and then analysis is to be done. Results are to be obtained after actual analysis of the data. Proper analysis is a very crucial stage of Dissertation.

Observations & Results Tabular Representation of data is to be done. Should depict tables achieving your aims and objectives and much more.

Discussion Here the questions that were raised in the introduction are explored. The findings (from the observations and results) must be explained.

Discussion Includes:- - Interpretation of the findings of the study. - Implications of further study to verify certain points. - Reasons for your inference. - Similarities and differences between the findings of the study and those already known (review of the lit.).

Discussion Example Sex incidence- From the study, it is found that 66.67% of males suffered from acne while 33.33 % of females suffered. Hence, the Male: Female ratio been 2:1. This corroborates with the fact that, males are more prone than females.

Summary & Conclusion Findings of the study are the conclusions. Should be linked with the objectives of the study. Based on the experiences gathered by you during the study.

Summary & Conclusion Includes:- - Inferences drawn on the basis of the results of the study. (Lessons learnt) - Recommendations for further research (E.g. – Anemia, common in a particular area, further research to probe the cause of anemia in that area). - Answers the questions that were raised in the introduction.

Summary & Conclusion - Explains the importance regarding the findings. - Any points that were not resolved in the study and suggest lines for further enquiry.

Summary Example Males were found to be more prone to suffer from Acne Vulgaris. Male: Female ratio was found to be 2:1.

Abbreviations Only standards terms and abbreviations must be used if needed. Includes – A list of all the abbreviations used in the dissertation along with full words.

Bibliography Includes the details regarding the Books; Thesis  & Journals or Periodicals referred by the student in writing his dissertation. Full references of the literature consulted should be given. This is appropriate as one may risk accusations of plagiarism if references are not mentioned. Harward Style is recommended. Should be arranged alphabetically, beginning with the surname.
