Global Temperature Change Key Question: How and why has global temperature changed and where’s the evidence? Key Words: Enhanced Greenhouse Effect Greenhouse Gases Methane Carbon Dioxide CFC's Ice Cores Global Warming HW: Research What happened in London 4th Feb 1814 and explain why it is linked to today’s lesson?

To Start….. The Greenhouse Effect Animation Watch the following animation and then… explain the greenhouse effect in your own words on a mini Whiteboard. Use a diagram

The Greenhouse Effect Solar radiation arrives from the sun as ……………. …light, while some is ……………………. back to space. visible reflected Infra red ………….. ……….radiation is reflected off the …………… surface where it becomes trapped by the ……………….……………….. gases in the atmosphere. Visible light reflected back To space Earth’s greenhouse ………….. is the main greenhouse gas and is released from volcanoes and mans burning of …………….. fuels CO2 Infra-red trapped by Greenhouse gases fossil Methane ………………….. and CFC’s are also GH gases.

The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect man The enhanced GH effect occurs due to ……………. burning fossil fuels and from cattle releasing ……………………………… methane The enhanced GH effect coincides with the ………………….. …………………… 150 years ago. Industrial Revolution We have records of increases CO2 levels over the last 150 years from …………… cores collected from the Arctic and Antarctic. ice

Evidence for Temperature Rise Ice core Temperature and CO2 Record

Conclusion There is a correlation between CO2 and temperature records. The ice core records show us that when CO2 levels are high so are temperatures and vice versa! Ice cores therefore give us good evidence for temperature change and the cause of that change!!!
