Scholar: What is the definition of empathy Scholar: What is the definition of empathy? What are the benefits of empathy? Compare and contrast the words Empathy, sympathy, compassion, and pity. Explain how empathy is both good and bad. How can we teach/learn empathy to others? Explain why that would be important? What problems can empathy solve or cause for you? In the United states? In the world? Read and Reflect #5

What are the three main parts of Communication???? 1. Self discourse: the subject of something either written or spoken 2. Listening 3. Feedback What are the three main parts of Communication????

How much of communication is actually spoken? 35% is verbal and 65% is nonverbal How much of communication is actually spoken?

Classroom Discussion Stereotypes Using the 3 parts of communication

Example1: If you are female stand up: Before you can sit down you must respond with an answer to fit the stereotype ex: “Just because I’m female, doesn’t mean I am supposed to be a good cook.”

Example #2: Athlete “Just because I’m an athlete, does not mean I do not value my education.”

1. Female 2. Male 3. Athlete 4. Spiritual 5. Minority 6. Blonde If you make A’s and B’s Teenager Stereotypes

Recognizing emotions that are being experienced by another What is Empathy?

Empathy is just that. You may not be able to always understand how someone is feeling, but you can try. Being a listener and not criticizing someone Not faking that you understand how they feel or suggesting you know best is another way to show empathy. Sometime just simply being there and listening is the best way to show empathy. You want to Guide your friends not make decisions for them. Have you ever heard the expression: “try putting yourself in someone else’s shoes?”

Have you ever felt that a person you are talking to is not listening Have you ever felt that a person you are talking to is not listening? Or does not think about your feelings or what you are going through? Why?

Group Scenarios Classroom Assignment #2 Read the Scenario’s on the worksheet given by the teacher. Students will analyze the situations and write how the person in the situation could respond using empathy.

Quick Write #2 Write a reflective journal entry about a time that something occurred to you and you shared that with someone. It could have been something unfortunate or something very exciting. Discuss how that person listened to you and responded and decide if they responded with empathy or not. If they did describe the empathetic qualities. If they did not, describe how that made you feel and how you wish they had responded.
