KENT, SURREY, SUSSEX DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES

PRIME MINISTERS DEMENTIA CHALLENGE FUND - 2012 £100K – PROJECTS £330K - GRANTS £75K – SOCIAL MOVEMENT

CRAWLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE Julie Kalsi Support Officer Crawley Dementia Alliance Only person paid by the alliance – part time and cheap! Hosted by CBC, funded through Crawley CCG, jointly managed by WSCC (Public Health)

CRAWLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE Our Vision Crawley – a town where people living with dementia, their families and carers are able to live well and get the support they need to ensure everyday life and the pursuit of leisure and cultural activities is made easy Dementia Friendly not Dementia Only! Pub, Football and bookies not lunch clubs and line dancing If 60 now, 25 in 1979 – YMCA, Sex Pistols – aware of what culture and leisure means

CRAWLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE What we have noticed; create an alliance / social movement use existing networks enthusiasm and passion encourages growth Opportunities are discovered Discover unknown assets, partners and leaders Importance of shared purpose Unknown assets, partners and leaders – our alliance includes Thales, Metrobus, HVMS Power Engineering – 2 large projects with Thales and Metrobus

CRAWLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE However….there are challenges; Takes time Needs resources Requires flexibility Time; 1) dependant on others and this can ripple out. 2) Not always other peoples number 1 priority / day job. 3) Changing awareness and attitudes is long-term Resource – does not always mean money (we’ve made our money last longer) but it doesn't need the support and time of others Flexibility – 1) Support others in the alliance – on their needs and timescales (no work plan) 2)Needs of people living with dementia change and evolve

CRAWLEY DEMENTIA ALLIANCE People living with dementia , their families, friends and carers are always at the centre of everything we do.
